Thomas F. Hartnett

Mr. Hartnett was born in Charleston, SC on August 7th, 1941, the only son of Thomas C. and Catherine F. Hartnett. He was educated in the Catholic Schools of Charleston and attended the College of Charleston. He is married to the former Bonnie Lee Kennerly. He and Bonnie have two children, Thomas F., Jr. and Lee Ann Sparwasser and five grandchildren, all of Charleston, SC.

In 1964, at the age of 22 years, Mr. Hartnett ran for the SC House State House of Representatives and was elected to represent all of Charleston County. He served in the State House for eight years. In 1972 he ran for the South Carolina State Senate and was elected to represent Charleston and Georgetown Counties. He served two four year terms as a State Senator.

In 1980, at the urging of the State Republican Party, he ran for the United States House of Representatives to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the incumbent Congressman. Mr. Hartnett was elected in a very tough race as the first Republican to representative the First District of South Carolina since Reconstruction. He served three terms and retired to return home to SC. While in the Congress he served as President of the Freshman Class of Republicans, on the House Armed Services Committee, the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee and was selected as a member of the Chowder and Marching Club. In 1988 he served as the SC State Chairman of the George H. W. Bush for President Campaign Committee.

In 1992 he made an unsuccessful run for the United States Senate against long time incumbent Ernest Fritz Hollings narrowly losing by less than 1% of the vote.

He served as a member of the South Carolina State Ports Authority Board of Directors for 12 years. He also served as the State Chairman of the George H. W. Bush presidential campaign in 1988.

Mr. Hartnett was a founding member and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Harbor National Bank. He also serves as a member of the South Carolina Legislative Audit Committee. He is presently serving as a Member of the Board of Directors of Roper Hospital. He is a member of the Hibernian Society of Charleston and the Knights of Columbus, Council 704. He is also:

Still actively involved in his family’s real estate firm which was founded by his parents in 1947, he specializes in real estate appraising and expert witnessing in matters involving disputed real estate and real estate related matters.

Mr. Hartnett resides with his wife Bonnie at the Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms just outside of Charleston. In his spare time he enjoys playing golf, reading and playing the piano.

He presently is the owner and operator of The Hartnett Company, LLC. Mr. Hartnett started this company after spending over 40 years as president of Hartnett Realty Company, Inc., a company started by his mother in 1947. He turned the family business over to his son in 2015.

Although always engaged in the selling of real estate in SC, including residential, commercial, industrial, and rural acreage, he specializes in real estate appraising and expert witness testifying in court cases involving all types of real estate litigation.

Mr. Hartnett has appeared in court as an expert witness in 33 of South Carolina’s 46 counties. He has appraised over 38 of South Carolina’s historic plantations for marketing and for conservation easements.

Known throughout SC by his fellow Realtors as a true real estate professional, he also enjoys a fine reputation among SC’s Legal profession.

Employment History

After leaving the College of Charleston in 1962, I joined my family real estate firm (Hartnett Realty Company, Inc.) as a real estate salesman and broker.

In 1963, I spent six months in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. From 1964-1980 I served in the South Carolina State House of Representatives and the South Carolina State Senate. In 1968, I became active in the real estate appraisal field and was designated a qualified appraiser for the Veterans Administration. I have continued in the real estate appraisal business since that time. From January 1981 until December 1986, I served in the United States House of Representatives from the First Congressional District of South Carolina. I retired from the Congress and returned to South Carolina in 1986.
